THE TRUTH REGARDING DOMINION

By Rev. H. Edward Mills

Man is commanded to have dominion-not given mere permission to have it. Man has no right to live his earth life a puppet of circumstance. His clear duty is to tower above circumstance and dictate to all extraneous force. But who in all history has fulfilled this universal duty of man? Against the background of millions who have failed stands out the colossal figure of One who conspicuously succeeded. He is the carpenter-prophet of Nazareth.

Would you understand what it is to have dominion? Study Him. But would you go beyond the mere understanding of dominion into its actual possession, then do what He did: calm the storm, heal the sick, cast out demons, raise the dead.

Three classes of Christians stand face to face with this great command, "have dominion." They all look upon Jesus Christ as the One who fully obeyed. The first class is very large. They boldly announce that it cannot be done. The second class say, "Yes, it can be done, but we can never hope to do it." The third class, in Christ-like humility say, " We are, through the power of Spirit, exercising dominion now." These Christians dare attempt the impossible and with what result? Always unmeasurable gain to themselves. Suppose they do not bring into manifestation the thing they speak. What then? They have in spite of this gained in God-consciousness enormously. The very effort to do the work of Christ has stimulated the Christ spirit within them.

But a wonderful thing takes place in many cases: the things attempted are actually done. Divine daring results in dominion. Thousands of cases are well authenticated where men and women have actually had dominion. One man picked up a deadly serpent. It never harmed him. One woman prayed off a forest fire. Anther man cast out a demon, while a fourth restored a dead body to life.

Some one says, How can I gain this dominion? I answer, Not by churning up your personal self, not by will power at all, by rather by the submergence of the self in a mighty consciousness of God. "Of mine own self I can do nothing. The Father in me, He doeth the works." Those who have gained and retained dominion have combined in themselves in a marvelous degree humility and positiveness. Their conviction has been like adamant. Their response to spirit as delicate as the finest recording instrument known. "Have dominion" has been to them not merely a peremptory command, but an emancipation proclamation. It has been their pardon out of prison, and their title to a throne. These men and women are pioneers of the race. Some day all will hear the wonderful summons and will likewise take their God-like authority "over every power of man’s enemy," whether disease, disaster, or death.
