THE TRUTH REGARDING CONSCIOUSNESS

By Rev. H. Edward Mills

Consciousness is one of the master words in The Truth. It stands for the measure of every man. Each one is just as great as is his consciousness. He would be an infinite man. One very good definition of God is this: "The Being of Infinite Consciousness."

Consciousness is innate knowing. It is each man’s surveying chain with which he measures the universe. The universe in turn measures him by his own standard, just as a teacher grades each pupil by what that pupil knows. Language is lame because men differ in consciousness. Jesus said, "Before Abraham was I am." The Pharisees replied, "Thou hast a devil and art mad." It was all a matter of consciousness. Let a great seer today proclaim, "There is no evil." Thousands answer, "You dream." Just consciousness, that’s all.

How glorious if that "dream" be a reality! If fear and failure, disease and death are but nightmares, to fade into native nothingness upon the coming of a sufficient consciousness, there is hope for humanity.

Consciousness is grasp, and realization, and attainment, and dominion. It is a mastership over facts and forces and forms. The earth-worm has a consciousness. It means mastery for him within its tiny range. The eagle has a consciousness. It makes the sky his playground and the mountain range his realm. Man has his consciousness, both individual and collective. It has ferreted out a million of nature’s secrets, and has harnessed into service forces of which the eagle and the earth-worm cannot conceive.

But man beholds another realm of reality and today he proposes as he never has before to make himself master here. Man first conceives and then perceives that the essence of all things is Spirit. His next step is to recognize that Spirit is the ONE ONLY reality of the universe. It is one thing to recognize this; it is quite another to realize it. Consciousness germinates with recognition, but bears its fruit in realization. Hence, he who has realized has attained to consciousness.

Who are the benefactors of mankind? Constructive statesmen, inventors, discoverers, pathfinders, sages, historians. But by far the greatest benefactor is he who lifts to higher planes the consciousness of men. Hence we perceive the reason for the supreme place of Jesus Christ in history. He is the creator of humanity’s Truth consciousness. Whoever would most bless men with his allotted earth life will, like Jesus, seek to become Christ, an understanding that shall eventuate in the consciousness that belongs to God.
